Alpha Natural Resources is an U.S. company, founded in 2004, formerly known as Foundation Coal Holdings. The company's primary business is the supply and export of coal; metallurgical coal for use in the steel making process and thermal coal for use in electric utilities and manufacturing industries. The company operates over 60 mines and 14 coal preparation plants and operates through two segments: Eastern and Western Coal Operations. The company also operates in the following business: idle underground mine, dry system technologies, coal gas recovery, equipment sales and repair operations, terminal services, and the leasing of mineral rights.
